In their latest adventure, the four Boxcar Children travel to Wildcat Crossing for a Wild West festival. Almost everyone in Wildcat Crossing is friendly and welcoming, but before long, things start to go wrong. Tricky Trigger, the performing horse, goes missing, as does a herd of Texan longhorn cattle. Someone intentionally messes up the costumes and props backstage and puts salt in the water tower. The children pitch in to help with the festival where they can and follow the clues to track down the culprit. Is it Calamity Connie, who dreams of singing in Nashville but is stuck in Wildcat helping her sister? Or Jack McCoy, the inexplicably grumpy cowboy? And what about Jasper Beebe, the real-estate agent whose client wants to use Wildcat Crossing as a movie set? Notes threatening to continue the crimes unless Wildcat Crossing is sold cast both Connie and Mr. Beebe under suspicion. Plenty of action keeps the story moving and will appeal to slightly older readers not quite ready for longer chapter books.--Harold, Suzanne Copyright 2014 Booklist
