Review by School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 2-A fluffy white caterpillar spends his time playing hide-and-seek when he isn't busy eating leaves. It's a pretty happy existence until a big, black crow comes along and Fred's game takes on a more serious nature. Fortunately, though, Gerald isn't the smartest crow in the woods, and children will enjoy finding Fred when Gerald cannot. Pye takes advantage of Hardy's jocular text with droll, cartoonlike pictures done in a wide variety of sizes and page formats. The typeface also becomes part of the artwork, heightening the humor. Children will be delighted to have an opportunity to outsmart Gerald, and teachers and librarians will welcome the chance to roll out all the stops when they make this picture book part of storytimes.-Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI (c) Copyright 2013.
