According to an opening author's note from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Loeb, this book is meant to make you get up out of your chair! And this collection of 10 songs (with an accompanying CD) will likely cause little ones to do just that. The energy is practically radiating off the pages, with retro-cool illustrations that fill the page, a fun design, and a mixture of classic songs and Loeb's own creations, some of which were written with the help of friends. There's old-favorite Miss Mary Mack, which includes the clapping pattern many adults will remember from their own childhoods; Do Your Ears Hang Low?, also complete with hand movements; and Hello, Today, a sun salutation of sorts, with a few very basic yoga poses included. Each song has a brief introduction in which Loeb offers up simple instructions for bopping along to the song ( A tennis racket makes a great guitar! ) Many kids may be too young to follow along with the book, but if adults master the moves (easy to do) and pop in the CD, you'll have a dance party in no time.--Kelley, Ann Copyright 2010 Booklist

K-Gr 2-True to its title, this brief book and CD introduce 10 interactive songs, some Loeb originals, all designed for maximum movement and rhythm. Popular folk or camp tunes include "Miss Mary Mack," "Peanut Butter and Jelly," "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" and "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes." Each spread provides the lyrics and cartoon images, giving instruction for movement. Occasional boxed instructions give additional information about the song or performance tips. While adults can use the book as a source for the lyrics, the lack of contrast between background and fonts, and cluttered images or decoration create pages that are challenging to read. The CD is essential to the book, as no musical notation is included, and it is definitely the highlight of this collaboration. With vocals by Lisa Loeb, Dan Petty, Michelle Lewis, and the Campers, joining acoustic guitar, bass, drums, piano or keyboard, the recording presents a varied collection of songs to encourage participation from a rhythmic stomp ("Everybody Wake Up") to a lyric sun salutation with yoga movement ("Hello Today"). This book offers lyrics to each song on the accompanying CD--a mixture of traditional favorites and originals--plus step-by-step instructions for dance moves and general suggestions for getting down while you listen. ORourke's oil and acrylic illustrations lend additional silliness to the package; the design is frenetic, but it's fitting given the concept. Great for groups and active story hours.
