Review by Choice Review

Leopold (1887-1948) stated in the foreword to A Sand County Almanac, "There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot." This book contains the full text of Leopold's famous work (published posthumously in 1949), but particularly useful are the 600-plus pages of previously uncollected essays, speeches, letters, and a few selections from Leopold's journals, important for those who have enjoyed his original main work. The volume also includes a chronology of Leopold's life; extensive notes; an index to plants/animals, with a mixture of common and scientific nomenclature; and a general index. Considering the stature of Leopold within the fields of conservation and ecology--not to mention his enduring popularity--this collection of writings will be important for many years to come, and useful to both scholars and Leopold enthusiasts. It will be a valuable complement to the University of Wisconsin's Aldo Leopold Archives (CH, Feb'09, 46-3209). Summing Up: Highly recommended. All academic and public library collections. J.
