The new Tunisian crochet Contemporary designs for time-honored traditions

Dora Ohrenstein

Book - 2012

"Tunisian crochet has been used to make garments since its invention in the 19th century. From the popular children's garments of the 1800's to the new shapes it's taking in our time, Tunisian crochet follows a rich tradition. This book will open doors for those intrigued with Tunisian crochet--both by updating older concepts with contemporary styles and yarns, and inventing new ones for today's crocheter and her family. Tunisian crochet makes a fabric quite unlike either crochet or knitting; it is more elastic, lighter in weight, and drapes differently. It can also be stretchy, springy and firm. These qualities can be used to create garments from delicate lacy shawls, to snug hats and mitts, to jackets and skirts. ...To better explore the possibilities of this technique, the book provides 20+ Tunisian stitch patterns showing a variety of possible fabrics one can create. Then 12 projects show many of these stitches at work in a variety of garments, accessories, and home projects. Several designers contribute patterns, better illustrating the wide range of interpretations Tunisian crochet is undergoing today"--

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Tunisian crochet has been lurking on the fringes of crafters' interest for decades, after its heyday in the 19th century, and this lovely book should do much to bring it front and center again. A "hybrid between knitting and crochet," Tunisian crochet uses a special hook and stitches are picked up in one direction for one row, then worked with the fabric facing back to finish off the row. The resulting fabric has stretch and is highly textured. The first part of this book, designed with Interweave's usual clean, rich style, gives a complete, albeit somewhat overwhelming, overview of needed stitching techniques, and then forty pages of inspiring stitch patterns follow. The instructions are clear and precise, and all of the stitches are show in full-color photographs. The book closes with a handful of patterns with a contemporary style. Whether a reader's eye is caught by the lovely, relatively uncomplicated Marisol Cardigan or the stunning, complex Sierra Bag, one of the included designs will have her or him hunting around at the local craft shop for a Tunisian crochet needle.
