Review by Choice Review

This down-to-earth work details in succinct, clear language the survival skills necessary to become a professional nurse. Though O'Lynn (Oregon Health and Science Univ.; coeditor with Russell Tranbarger, Men in Nursing, CH, Jun'07, 44-5679) emphasizes a male perspective on becoming a nurse, this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about entering the nursing profession. The two most important chapters deal with surviving nursing school and getting a first job as a nurse. Other chapters are devoted to the gender issues men face before and after graduation. The data supporting the author's concepts are up-to-date and well chosen. The section on nursing education from the perspective of both students and instructors is worth the price of the book. The work examines the continuum of becoming a valued member of the nursing profession, including historical facts related to entering the field and overcoming sex-based barriers. A valuable resource for current and potential nursing students. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels of undergraduate students, high-school students, faculty, and professionals/practitioners.
