Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-This introduction to the French language takes young learners through a year of activities, from growing a garden to building a snowman. The book's colorful illustrations show Marie and her brother Pierre enjoying the seasons while they engage in appropriate pursuits. Each page includes the siblings narrating their actions, a few highlighted vocabulary words, and song lyrics. English and French are side-by-side, allowing for easy comprehension. The real treasure here is the CD, which includes lively and engaging renditions of "Day-O," "Old MacDonald", "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," and "Oats and Beans and Barley Grow," among other songs. The French traditional songs are also a treat, though the absence of English translations is a shame. The vocals are clear and easy to understand. For the most part, the English verses are sung by a male vocalist and a female handles the French, with children joining in. The CD does not provide an exact read-aloud of the book, and the lack of page-turn signals makes following along difficult. However, as a celebration of and an introduction to the language, this is spot-on.-Heather Acerro, Allen County Public Library. (c) Copyright 2010.
