Review by Library Journal Review

UK-based knitting instructor Tomkies combines two popular methods for learning knitting-books and video tutorials-into a single package. The organization is a little bit odd: rather than walking beginners step by step through a simple first project, Tomkies organizes the book by topic, so all cast-ons are covered before the first knit stitch is taken. Though the breadth of coverage is good, the lack of projects is problematic, since most knitters want something to show for their efforts. The videos are a cut above the standard YouTube tutorial fare; the narration is good and the focus is on the knitting, so visual learners will benefit from the added content. Readers can access the videos via QR codes or by typing the URL for the individual videos (which are hosted on YouTube) into their favorite web browser. VERDICT Beginning knitters looking for a basic knitting reference will appreciate the combination of step-by-step print instructions and well-produced video tutorials, but the lack of projects may frustrate knitters looking for an all-in-one beginners' guide.
