Primary sources from survivors, time lines of high-profile events, infographics, maps, and jaw-dropping photographs cover every inch of this dynamic book on the scary natural disasters that wreak havoc in every corner of the world. Included are chapters on weather, volcanoes and earthquakes, and even threats of disasters in the form of near-earth objects and solar storms. The information is incredibly up-to-date and geographically diverse, including information on the recent tsunami in Japan, the 2010 Guatemalan sinkhole, and last winter's North American blizzards. The book not only considers the science of natural disasters but also our relationship to the environment, examining people's role in creating disasters and the stark cultural differences in preparedness and response when they occur. Graphic, honest, and relevant, this book is engaging in both topic and format. A free digital companion book, Storm Chasers, is accessible at the publisher's website using an access code in the front cover.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2010 Booklist

This addition to the Discover More series offers captivating photographs that show the effects of earthquakes, floods, avalanches, volcanic eruptions, and other events. Firsthand accounts from survivors, witnesses, and rescue workers offer an inside perspective on such recent disasters as the 2010 Haitian earthquake and Hurricane Katrina. Charts, graphs, sidebars, and digital illustrations demonstrate how tornados, hurricanes, and tsunamis form, and a section about how humans can cause natural disasters discusses global warming, overpopulation, and the spread of disease. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of both the complex conditions that cause disasters and of the lives that they affect. Ages 10-14. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Review by Horn Book Review

Although the subject invites an alarmist tone, this book is predominantly a well-organized presentation of accurate and interesting material about disasters--mostly natural ones, including tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. Lavishly illustrated with stirring photos, it also has clear captions and charts. Though the spreads favor breadth over depth, a digital download for further information is available. Glos., ind.
