Lomong's inspiring autobiography traces his journey from six-year-old Sudanese refugee to elite American runner. Kidnapped from his village by soldiers, "Lopepe" proved too small to be useful. A daring escape left Lomong alive but languishing in Kenya's harrowing Kakuma Refugee Camp for ten years. Soccer provided a respite, though young players were made to run along the camp's 18-mile perimeter before games-workouts that provided escape from the facility's grinding horrors. Lomong's eventual naturalization to America afforded him culture shock-and two NCAA track titles. Between serving as flag bearer for Team U.S.A. in the 2008 Olympics and making the 2012 squad, Lomong ran professionally and focused on philanthropy. Narrator Brandon Hirsch's assured, mature voice matches Lomong's upbeat style, helping the narrative move at a good clip. VERDICT Celebratory Christian praises are frequent here though muted.
