Soulless The manga

Gail Carriger

Book - 2012

"Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Or will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain... embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?"--Amazon.com (viewed February 23, 2012).

Review by Booklist Review

The first book in Gail Carriger's best-selling Parasol Protectorate series has now become a manga drawn by artist Rem, best known for the manga adaptation of Ellen Schreiber's YA series Vampire Kisses. While both series feature the paranormal, this is decidedly more spicy and designed with an older teen or adult audience in mind. Readers are introduced to the feisty Miss Alexia Tarabotti, who at 26 is considered a spinster in that jolly and enlightened age known as Victorian England. To add to her troubles, Miss Tarabotti was born without a soul. This gives her the ability to nullify any skills possessed by paranormals such as vampires, werewolves, or ghosts. While Miss Tarabotti's special talent repels most beings, human or otherwise, it has attracted the attention of a very curious and possibly dangerous few. This first volume is a fun, saucy romp that will appeal to fans of paranormal romance, bodice rippers, steampunk, and shojo manga.--Mack, Candice Copyright 2010 Booklist
