Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

This anthology details the Beach Boys' story through the origins, production, , and achievements of each of the 50 songs addressed by the text. Dillon, an entertainment journalist in Toronto, includes interviews and commentary about the Beach Boys' music from not only members of the group, like Brian Wilson and Mike Love, but also other prominent entertainers who claim the band as an influence: The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, country musician Lyle Lovett, actress and singer-songwriter Zooey Deschanel, and heavy metal rocker Alice Cooper, to name just a few. This incorporation of various generational perspectives from the pasts of so many artists, collaborators, and producers propels the book from a detailed history to a vivid account of the group's cultural influence since their start. Dillon intertwines the inspiration for and production of the songs with accounts of the band's turbulent and emotional past, such as Murry Wilson's overbearing control over his sons, and Brian and Dennis Wilson's struggles with substance abuse, telling the Beach Boys' story through the window that is their music. Well-written and relevant to today's music scene, young and old fans alike will enjoy Dillon's collection as the band commences its 50th Anniversary Tour this summer. B&w photos throughout. Review by Library Journal Review

Hot on the heels of the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary tour and album, this book presents a look at one of the biggest bands in the history of popular music. Freelance writer Dillon has constructed a Beach Boys book that not only shares information about the band itself, but also fully communicates the deep influence that their catalog has had on the music world. The layout of the book, 50 short essays that each address a different song, makes it an easy but lively read. Famous musicians and fans-ranging from Lyle Lovett, Alice Cooper, Cameron Crowe, and Zooey Deschanel to Brian Wilson himself-share their perspectives on the music. Readers are never overwhelmed, and the perfect portions of information will encourage them to seek out more of the band's music. VERDICT Focusing on both the Beach Boys in pop culture as well as the band's spiritual interests, this title gives all fans of the band's music something great to read. Readers will come to appreciate the depth of the Beach Boys' work and recognize the breadth of their influence. Recommended.-Justin Hoenke, Portland P.L., ME (c) Copyright 2012.
