Like I See the Sun in China (2010) and I See the Sun in Afghanistan (2011), this picture book in the I See the Sun series gives a glimpse into contemporary life around the world through a fictionalized child's viewpoint. Anton lives in St. Petersburg, and in simple words illustrated with collage artwork, he describes his daily life, with a particular emphasis on the arts: he attends a special music school, where he practices with a violin ensemble, and he enjoys a visit to the huge Hermitage Museum. Each page includes both Russian and English text, and a long, appended note fills in some political history, including the crucial role played by St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) during WWII. The main focus here is on the present, though, with images of people shopping for food in the long, dark, icy winter and Papa returning home tired after driving a taxi all day. Kids may easily recognize the connections with their own families and with the stories of relatives far away.--Rochman, Hazel Copyright 2010 Booklist
