Summer interlude

DVD - 2012

Marie is an accomplished ballet dancer haunted by her tragic youthful affair with a shy, handsome student. Her memories of the rocky shores of Stockholm's outer archipelago mingle with scenes from her gloomy present, most of them set in the dark backstage environs of the theater where she works.

Review by Library Journal Review

Summer is the season for young love in these early Ingmar Bergman films. Told in flashbacks from the vantage of a late-career ballerina, Interlude finds the disillusioned woman reflecting on a blissful teenage affair that ended tragically. In Monika, an impulsive, headstrong girl strikes up a romance with a shy lad, and the two leave their menial jobs and humdrum lives for an idyllic beach romp before reality returns. Not as deep as later Bergman works but hinting at nascent genius, these should please his fans. (c) Copyright 2012. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
