Review by Booklist Review
There are more than 230,000 marine species, and this book sets out to discuss many of the most interesting, along with the implications of human interference in aquatic ecosystems. The bright photographic images and bold graphic layout are irresistible, even to hardened reluctant readers. Information is arranged into five thematic chapters such as Life in the Ocean and Oceans under Threat and each begins with provocative questions designed to whet kids' attentions and keep them turning pages. Frequent sidebars and marginalia include flashy icons organizing additional details into relevant vocabulary, online video clips, literature connections, and ideas to promote conservation efforts. A digital companion book devoted exclusively to sharks is easily accessible online and offers a broad array of possible applications in the classroom. This book is equal parts compelling trivia, textbook facts, and obligatory conservationism, all wrapped up in a kid-friendly package.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2010 Booklist
