Despite some uninformative and vague statements ( Humans have been fascinated by celestial objects and events for centuries ) and the distracting capitalization of sun and moon, this slim entry in the Space Science series nicely covers the different angles associated with eclipses. The authors describe the difference between solar and lunar eclipses, look at how eclipses were perceived by ancient peoples, discuss the modern science associated with studying eclipses, and finish with tips on observing them. The photographs range from stunners to fillers, and a few handy diagrams help visualize things like orbits and paths of light. A handful of Think about it insets prompt readers to apply the information themselves, and the book includes an access code for the publisher's AV2 website, which provides enhanced multimedia materials. Overall it's a fairly dry treatment, but the subject holds enough inherent appeal to make this a good choice for science units or even for kids to peruse before an upcoming celestial event.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 4-6-Each of these titles provides a fairly close look at a relatively narrow astronomical topic. Eclipses, for example, explains the mechanics of planetary transits as well as lunar, solar, and annular eclipses, while Space Explorers introduces several spacecrafts and people to know from Galileo to Sally Ride. Text is wrapped around several color photos of decent, if not exemplary, quality on each spread, with inset side comments, captions, or relevant websites. Each volume closes with a glance at careers, a quiz, and a website address that takes readers to videos, slide shows, and other additional resources. (c) Copyright 2011.
