Handy for filling just a few moments or even an entire snow day, this activity book's suggestions will help parents, teachers, and babysitters get through the long post-holiday stretch until spring arrives. While some of the homespun suggestions seem a bit obvious, such as hiking or making a snowman, others are sure to be a hit, like the detailed directions for building an igloo, making your own snow globe, and cobbling a pair of snowshoes. The variety of ideas are divided into four sections crafting, outdoor play, indoor play, and feasting and provide a wide range of options to match kids' preferences and group sizes. A difficulty rating that uses one to three snowflakes to indicate how much time and involvement each activity might entail is helpful for planning, and most of the suggestions, especially those outside of the kitchen, do not require many tools or supplies. Trivia and tidbits are sprinkled throughout to highlight important science concepts or historical details, while line drawings and color photos of kids enjoying the season round out this collection of refreshingly low-tech winter activities.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 3-6-The goal of this book is to promote seasonal fun and it delivers. It includes everything from growing rock candy to making perfect pancakes, from how to make a snow fort and igloo to learning to ski and make snow ice cream. There are instructions for crafts, games, recipes, and science experiments to try. Even children who live where there is no snow or really cold weather will find plenty of activities to enjoy. All of the directions are written out in detail, often with illustrations that show the exact way to achieve a successful finished product. All projects are rated by difficulty and whether or not they require adult supervision or assistance.
