Balls and puppies go hand in hand, and Biscuit, the golden-haired star of many an I Can Read title, has his eye on a blue ball dotted with white stars. Unfortunately, it's the one a girl and her friends are playing with, and there are no dogs allowed in the game. Biscuit can't resist, however, and he jumps into the fray to snag the bouncy plaything, which deflates between his teeth ( silly puppy ). Luckily, there's a solution that allows everyone to play. This My First I Can Read entry offers up one- and two-syllable words, plenty of repetition (ball, play, woof), and action-packed illustrations, all of which are perfect for sharing with emergent readers.--Kelley, Ann Copyright 2010 Booklist

Though they beg, rambunctious Biscuit just can't seem to stay out of the kids' baseball game; eventually, it's the ball that pays the price. The basic text features "woof, woof"-ing from the pup on nearly every page; the repetition combined with Schories's cute illustrations featuring puppies and ball-playing tots make this a solid Biscuit offering for preschoolers or very early readers.
