A high-interest subject baking cupcakes along with simple sentences, sight words, and bold, uncluttered art distinguish this early reader series title, designed for graduates of the Bob Books boxed sets. It's Dad's birthday, and Jack and Anna want to give him a gift, but what? They decide to make cupcakes; unlike a card, Cupcakes will be a big surprise. With Mom supervising the endeavor, the siblings go through the cupcake-making process. There are surprises along the way, including when Buddy the dog knocks a box of prepackaged cookies into the batter. After baking in the oven, the cupcakes are enjoyed by the whole family Yum! Twelve appended flashcards reinforce words contained in the story. On one side is a single word, such as birthday or flour, while the flip side uses each word in a sentence (bolding the featured word), accompanied by interior artwork.
