Review by Booklist Review
The latest Math Is CATegorical title presents fractions as a way to express parts of an entity (pizza) or a group (jugglers). The rhyming lines of text bounce along in a genial way, introducing a lesson using flat boxes of pizza that can be sliced into two, four, six, or eight pieces to represent fractional values and to show that one value can be expressed in different ways. After demonstrating the usefulness of fractions in recipes, Cleary introduces the terms numerator and denominator. The final double-page spread offers 10 pie charts illustrating commonly used fractions and expressing each one verbally (one-third, seven-eighths) as well as numerically (1/3, 7/8). Brightened with eye-catching color combinations, Gable's cartoon-style illustrations express the simple mathematical ideas clearly, while his wacky critters add a good deal of humor. An upbeat introduction to fractions.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist
