Review by School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 3-The Sills cover the creatures' diet, size, migratory habits, anatomical features, reproduction, predators, and habitats. Of special interest are their hovering skills and aerobatic displays. Each spread consists of one large-type sentence and a large watercolor depiction with just enough information for youngsters to gain an introduction to hummingbirds. The text and art combine to make this title a useful and engaging read. An afterword elucidates and expands on the details of each painting, offering more information for interested readers.-Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA (c) Copyright 2011. In each spread, one simple sentence faces a full-page, detailed painting of a hummingbird. Each plate, numbered and labeled with the specific bird's name, corresponds to an afterword that contains a fact-filled paragraph with information such as distribution, habitat, food, and special capabilities for the pictured animal. The main text is easily accessible for young readers, while older kids will also be interested in the back matter. Reading list, websites. Bib., glos. (c) Copyright 2012.
