Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-Poppa Pig, Momma Pig, and Little Pig are enjoying a quiet afternoon when the Big Bad Wolf knocks at their door. Poppa Pig says, "Quick, everyone hide!" For Little Pig, hiding behind the couch means that they're about to have a surprise party, right? That's the setup for this gentle take on the classic tale. The plot is appealing, although the text doesn't have the rhythmic, concise quality that makes a great read-aloud. Asch's artwork is appealing, too, with his characteristic rounded figures and emphatic lines. Overall, this book has its charms but is not especially distinctive. Add where either Asch's work or the fractured fairy-tale genre is popular.-Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL (c) Copyright 2011. Review by Horn Book Review

The Big Bad Wolf is taken aback when Little Pig throws him a surprise birthday party. The villain expects to feast on pig but instead ends up with vegetable casserole and chocolate cake. Although Asch's text is a little wordy, the story's happy ending is satisfying. The accompanying digital illustrations are bright and cheery. (c) Copyright 2011.
