The creators of this title are cofounders of the Milestones Project, which includes a large collection of photographs of children from all over the world. Here, the team has selected some of those images and reproduced them in beautiful, unframed color portraits and group photos of global kids today. Accompanying the pictures are quotes from young people, as well as from 20 adult movers and shakers, many of them famous, including Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Eric Carle, and Tom Hanks, who share messages about conservation, heroes, bullies, pain, kindness, grandparents, and more. Along with the upbeat photos, there are some cliches ( Life is a voyage of discovery ), but many of these sentiments will be new to children, who will browse the spacious spreads and linger over what speaks to them. The substantive back matter includes brief biographies of the adult contributors and suggestions for parents and teachers on how to spark discussion and distinguish between cultural chatter and wisdom. --Rochman, Hazel Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 3-6-Members involved with this project spent a year collecting "words of wisdom" from children and "elders" around the globe. This title groups selected quotations in thematic sections related to self-worth, peace, and nature. The attractive layout features uncaptioned photos of children of various ages and races. Their countries of origin are not identified, either in the images or quotations, which are attributed only to a child's name and age. Among the "elders" quoted are actors, authors, illustrators, and educators. Brief biographies appear at the end of the volume. Although some children may browse the contents, particularly to view the photos, the book's intended audience appears to be adults. Both the foreword and the suggestions about how to use the book are addressed to them, especially as they promote ways to share wisdom among generations. Perhaps the book could find a place in a teacher-resource or family-education section, or senior center, but it may require "hand selling" to move it from the shelves.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato (c) Copyright 2011. With quotations from children and adults (some famous, some not), this is less a book that children will pick up on their own than one adults could use to spark discussion with them. Attractive photos of children from eighteen countries reinforce the idea of wisdom as a global resource. (c) Copyright 2011. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
