Review by Booklist Review
Although it is not exactly hot news, raising chickens outside customary farm situations is increasing in favor. It costs little to raise chickens, they provide a ready and steady supply of fresh eggs, and, as one learns in this delightful guide, they can even be pets with individual personalities. The format here is the draw and readers will indeed be drawn into the lives of three hens named Amelia, Tilda, and Honey, collectively referred to as the girls. From newly hatched chicks to grand dame layers, the author and the wonderful photographer chart the growth of any and all baby chicks into fully mature adults, with the girls as examples. Along the way, there are important discussions about heat lamps, health and cleanliness, brooding, breed types, housing, and much more essential information. An inviting guide, done with great spirit as well as authority.--Hooper, Brad Copyright 2010 Booklist
