"It's time for bed. Who needs to be tucked in?" Hacohen and Schar-schmidt's first children's book, tailor-made for bedtime, is clever in its simplicity and execution, allowing tuckees to become the tuckers in this beloved nightly ritual. Readers lift blanket-shaped flaps over a baby zebra, moose, hedgehog, and others who are ready to turn in, as each animal is bid good night. PreS-In a gentle, rhythmic nighttime chant, an unseen narrator asks, "Who needs to be tucked in?" The next page reveals a pop-eyed cartoon baby animal, head on a pillow against a field of white. Readers turn a half-page which is revealed as a blanket and the baby is tucked in. The opposite page, night blue with yellow stars, displays the text "Good night, baby" and the next request for who needs tucking. In the cozy conclusion, the narrator asks readers if they are ready for bed. This simple book reveals a zoo of animals-hedgehog, pig, alligator, moose, peacock, elephant, each on a uniquely colored and patterned pillow and being covered by a joyously fun and surprisingly patterned blanket. The animals are rendered digitally in a sketchy, jazzy style with swaths of bright color. Seven baby animals, including an elephant, piglet, and peacock, need to be tucked in. Each double-page spread shows the animal on the left-hand page while the facing page includes a blanket-shaped lift-the-flap with the creature's name and repetitive text, "Who else needs to be tucked in?" " 'It's time for bed. Who needs to be tucked in?' / 'I do!' " says Baby Pig. Six more baby animals respond to the same question with the same answer: Zebra, Elephant, Alligator, Mouse, Hedgehog and Peacock. The story ends with the question, "Do you?" and the response to the presumptive answer: "Good night, you!" What makes the book charming is the device of a half-page turn that reveals the "I do!" and, once turned, becomes an appropriately patterned bed cover (the elephant nestles in paisley; the alligator snuggles under a green, tooth-patterned coverlet). Toddlers will love identifying the animals (though the hedgehog may not be familiar to most American readers). The digital illustrations are colorful basic shapes with quick brush strokes adding details (bug eyes) and a spontaneous feeling. The simple concept and novelty of "turn the page and tuck the baby in" should become a favorite for bedtime that requires repeated readings--or until the parent pleads, "Tuck ME in!"
