Fans of Simon Brett's Fethering mysteries, in which a woman retired from a position of influence seeks a simple life in a picturesque village but keeps finding dead bodies instead, should like the second in Dunn's Cornish mystery series (the first was Manna from Hades, 2009). Eleanor Trewynn has spent years all over the globe, helping the poor through an organization called the London Committee to Save the Starving. Widowed and ready to roost back home, she settles into a fictional village in Cornwall. This time out, murder enters her life yet again when a young artist, neighbor, and friend, Nick Gresham, returns from a trip to discover that his studio has been broken into, sculptures broken, and paintings slashed. Gresham is convinced a jealous local artist destroyed his work. He rushes to the artist's studio only to find him stabbed in the back. Suspicion falls on Gresham, and, predictably, Eleanor works with the local police and her detective-sergeant niece to clear him. Worn plot lines and a bit fey in the writing, but wonderful Cornish and cozy atmosphere carry the day.--Fletcher, Connie Copyright 2010 Booklist

Once again murder disrupts the quiet life of widowed charity shop owner Eleanor Trewynn, who's settled in the village of Port Mabyn with her Westie, Teazle, in British author Dunn's delightful second cozy set in 1960s Cornwall (after 2009's Manna from Hades). On returning from a train trip to London, Eleanor's artist friend and neighbor, Nick Gresham, discovers that someone has slashed several of his paintings in his Port Mabyn shop. Rather than go to the police, a furious Nick sets out to confront rival artist Geoffrey Monmouth, who Nick is sure is the culprit. Accompanied by an anxious Eleanor, Nick finds Geoff stabbed to death in his Padstow bungalow. When the authorities detain Nick, Eleanor determines to track down the real killer, who just might be one of the young artists living communally on a local farm. Returning from a successful business trip to London, artist Nick Gresham finds his paintings have been destroyed in his studio. When the culprit is murdered, Nick is the prime suspect, and amateur sleuth Eleanor Trewynn swings into action.
