Stewart (emer., Warwick Univ.) is well known for his popular books (e.g., Flatterland, CH, Nov'01, 39-1620; The Magical Maze, Nov'98, 36-1620) and magazine columns on mathematics. Cows in the Maze is a collection of his "Recreational Mathematics" columns that were originally published in Scientific American. The book covers problems in knot theory, geometry, probability, and even time travel. Many columns, which have been expanded and corrected in some cases, are written in story form, often culminating with a puzzle for the reader to solve. Stewart focuses on ingenuity and problem solving; thus readers need only a minimal technical background in mathematics. The author includes references to books and Web sites for further exploration. Fans of the late Martin Gardner and his Scientific American "Mathematical Games" columns will find this work to be similar in its appeal. Summing Up: Recommended.
