Review by Library Journal Review

Passing Strange is a coming-of-age story about an African American man who decides that in order to find himself he must leave South Central Los Angeles and head to Europe. The Broadway show, which Lee filmed during its last performances at the Belasco Theatre in July 2008, is a revelation. The music is amazing, the staging is incredible, and the actors, three of whom were nominated for Tony Awards, are fantastic. Viewers will find themselves lost in the performances, then experience an "aha moment" where the message suddenly becomes clear. The DVD includes interviews with author/composer/star Stew, who received a Tony for Best Book of a Musical, and his collaborator, Heidi Rodewald; behind-the-scenes stuff; and the theatrical trailer for the show. This film, which was also presented at Sundance and broadcast on the PBS "Great Performances" series, is essential for all viewers.-Danna Bell-Russel, Library of Congress (c) Copyright 2010.
