Quick: Name a craft that's inexpensive, boasts three dimensions, uses just one type of material (and little if no equipment), plus welcomes any level of experience. It's origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, an art that simply begs to be tried. And Nguyen obliges, offering a visual how-to book that gently instructs as well as inspires. Many pages are devoted to explaining the fundamentals in detail, from materials to basic and base folds (that is, those six acting as foundations for specific creations). The particulars matter: paper, for instance, must be thin, keep its crease well, and fold flat. Glue needs to be applied sparingly with a flat toothpick. The 132 projects that follow benefit from the author's painstaking ABCs. It starts with the easy-to-do origami, then graduates to harder projects. Animals are well represented; other themes include man and machine, holiday, and irregular origami (for instance, made from junk mail or dollar bills). Most important, each project features complete pictures with appropriate narratives (although no list of materials is included).--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist

This collection of over 125 projects from 14 of Nguyen's previous books (e.g., Dinosaur Origami; Monster Origami) includes human and animal figures, real and imagined, with skill levels ranging from easy to intermediate. Each project has excellent step-by-step diagrams. A good catchall origami book. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
