Review by Booklist Review

As long as children have social-studies reports to write, there will always be a place in libraries for books on countries. Playing to National Geographic's strengths gorgeous photos, plenty of maps, and a clean design its Countries of the World series is as good a bet as any to help keep apace. With a reliable mix of attractiveness and information, the books use a somewhat chatty text to introduce everything from geography, wildlife, and history to culture, government, and economy for each profiled country. Spain is a solid choice to generate interest, as this country offers a number of kid-friendly customs (the running of the bulls; the world's largest food fight, known as La Tomatina), which are touched on in the many supplemental boxes. The books in this series will instill an entry-level appreciation for the spirit of a country, where it has been, and where it is headed. Back matter includes Add a Little Extra to Your Country Report, with flags, national anthems, and currency; creative ideas for further research; and the requisite time line.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 5-8-The books are good choices for reports as the information is substantial but not overwhelming. The texts are clear, and the discussion points are well chosen. In Spain, readers learn about bullfighting, that the Rock of Gibraltar is actually a territory of Great Britain, and how Gaudi's Sagrada Familia cathedral was started in 1882 and isn't expected to be finished until 2036. In United States, readers are told about chasing tornadoes, how the temperature in Death Valley often reaches 120 degrees, and how giant kelp, found in California's kelp forests, "can grow 2 feet in just one day." This title has a couple of confusing sentences, but they don't detract from its usefulness. Both texts are complemented with stunning photographs. Tips are appended to "Add a Little Extra to Your Country Report!" along with typical back matter. Solid additions.-Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Review by Horn Book Review

Rather than aiming for comprehensive coverage, this series provides students with a smattering of historical, ecological, sociological, and cultural information about the title country. Excellent, good-sized maps illustrating topography, population, history, etc., in addition to well-composed landscape and nature photographs, support the text. Timeline, websites. Bib., glos., ind.
