Review by Booklist Review
Few materials can match the sheer sensuousness and incredible array of textures of leather. London-based designer Pogson exploits the best of suede, cowhide, and the like through artful, ultrasimple, clean designs. The book is sectioned by techniques, beginning with instructions and segueing to three to five actual projects; it progresses from relatively simple (cutting, gluing, and hole punching) to cuir bouilli (the art of molding leather) and braiding. Crafters are first introduced to skin's definitions and varieties, along with tools and equipment needed. Basic techniques follow, including grooving and using a slot punch, though each is illustrated only by one color photograph, sans step-by-step visual explanations. Yet despite the lack of complete foundational how-to's, the twentysomething designs are worth consulting a second book on leather making: a hexagonal Oriental fabric-lined jewelry box; exotic Moroccan slippers; even knotty cufflinks that subtly say I mastered the craft.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2009 Booklist
