*Starred Review* This entry in the Spot the Shape series is a near-perfect union of concept and execution. Using the vibrant photography and clarion text that has become the trademark of Heinemann's Acorn books, Rissman lays out a simple premise ( Shapes are all around us. ) before introducing the seven shapes to come: rectangle, square, semicircle, diamond, and so forth. The organization is simple: a sports picture with a question ( What shape is this ball? ) followed by a page turn revealing the relevant object outlined and the answer revealed. Rissman's take on what constitutes a sport is refreshingly inclusive; baseball, soccer, and hockey are featured as expected, but so are race-car driving, long jumping, rugby, yoga, kayaking, and cycling. What is most impressive, though, are the stunning aerial photographs that turn baseball diamonds and tennis courts into dazzling intersections of geometric patterns. This is the kind of book that will wake readers up to the complexity of everyday items even the cover image of a soccer ball will have you seeing circles, triangles, hexagons, and trapezoids you had never before noticed. Other titles in the series include Shapes in Music and Shapes in the Garden.--Kraus, Daniel Copyright 2009 Booklist
