The last metro Le dernier métro

DVD - 2009

Paris, 1942. Lucas Steiner is a Jew who feels compelled to leave the country in order to survive the German occupation during WWII. His wife Marion is an actress and a member of the Resistance who goes on to direct the theater for him. She tries to keep the theater alive by rehearsing a new play. She hires Bernard Granger for the leading role. The troupe believes that the show must go on no matter the circumstances. But Lucas never left the country, he is actually hiding in the basement.

Review by Library Journal Review

A theater company in occupied France gives new meaning to the adage "the show must go on" when its Jewish manager hides in an underground room while his wife (Catherine Deneuve) plays in the newest production, falling for her costar (Gerard Depardieu) as Nazis lurk, bombs fall, and power fails. Realism takes a backseat to romantic notions about art conquering all in FranAois Truffaut's nostalgic tale. For devotees of the beloved director. (See Trailers, LJ 2/1/09) (c) Copyright 2010.
