Review by Library Journal Review

This is a perfect film for anyone who is a writer, or who thinks he or she might want to write. Framed around Lamott's trademark Lecture on Writing (the full talk appears in the extras), the program takes us through Lamott's life, her journey as a writer, the path she took to conquer her alcoholism, her decision to have a child on her own, and her conversion to Christianity. We are privy to Lamott's conversations with other artists, like Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, as well as witness to her public appearances. Lamott is unique, and the film gives the viewer the opportunity to enjoy her individuality, which clearly she has fought hard to attain. Lamott has written books across genre lines and has a wide base of fans who will want to see their hero up-close. Bird by Bird will be popular with viewers who enjoy Inside the Actors Studio and shows that offer a glimpse into a celebrity's personal life. It will especially appeal to writing groups, writing programs, and the writer in all of us. Recommended.-Manya Shorr, Omaha P.L. (c) Copyright 2010.
