Review by Booklist Review

A mysterious new villain arrives in Gotham, aiming to take down Batman. His plan begins with breaking the Joker out of Arkham Asylum to unwittingly play the role of bait. Violence ensues, with the Joker starting a gang war with Maxie Zeus. Batman is, of course, determined to stop the bloodshed and bring the madmen to justice. Smith's deft scripting lets his love of the character (and general fan-boy nature) shine through. Walt Flanagan's art is the showpiece here, though, complemented beautifully by strong inking and plush, saturated color work. The results are as deliciously dark and moody as a Batman story worth its salt should be.--Coleman, Tina Copyright 2009 Booklist
