In 1986, DC rebooted Superman, eliminating nearly 50 years' accumulated baggage to give the venerable character a fresh start. Before the relaunch, superstar writer Moore bid an affectionate farewell to the character as he'd been known for decades in a two-issue story envisioning how the Superman saga might come to an end. He pitted the Man of Steel against the deadliest challenge of his career and brought out the supporting cast, from Lois, Jimmy, and other friends to foes like Luthor and Brainiac, for final bows. Imparting a surprising emotional resonance to elements about to be jettisoned, from Superman's childhood sweetheart Lana Lang to his pet dog Krypto, Moore created the quintessential Silver Age Superman tale. The art by Curt Swan, the illustrator most associated with Superman from the 1960s to the '80s, adds to the valedictory air. Added to this hardcover edition are two earlier Moore-scripted stories, one in which Superman encounters Moore's signature character, Swamp Thing, and a team-up with Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman drawn by Moore's Watchmen collaborator, Dave Gibbons.--Flagg, Gordon Copyright 2009 Booklist
