Review by Library Journal Review

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Hicks (Shine; No Reservations) followed composer Philip Glass (b.1937) over an 18-month period, from New York to Glass's summer home in Nova Scotia and to appearances in Australia and Germany, producing an amazingly comprehensive look at both the man and his music. Hicks also interviewed a number of family members and longtime friends and collaborators such as Chuck Close, Robert Wilson, Errol Morris, Woody Allen, and Martin Scorsese. Divided into 12 sections, the presentation moves from interesting and intimate biographical segments to illuminating insights into Glass's artistic process and sensibilities. The wealth of extras feature commentary by Hicks and nine deleted/extended scenes plus longer interviews with Glass and four segments of music performances, including a solo piano performance by Glass. Hicks's access and skill inform this exceptionally educational and entertaining documentary. Beautifully photographed and edited, this film is very highly recommended for all music lovers and essential for all music collections.-Tom Budlong, Atlanta (c) Copyright 2010.
