If there was ever a holiday that was perfect for a crafts book, it's Valentine's Day. This brief volume opens with an introduction to the holiday (though it states some speculation as fact) and then proceeds to the various projects, which include a cupid, heart sculpture, and lacy heart card. Several of the projects use patterns that can be traced from the book. Author McGee is a paper artist, but for the most part, the crafts he offers are simple enough to execute. Scissor work is necessary, especially in the Lacy Valentine, and in the Danish Woven Heart Basket, some manual dexterity is required. McGee offers a little historical perspective on some of the projects, and a short list of books and Web sites completes this entry in the Paper Craft Fun for Holidays series.--Cooper, Ilene Copyright 2008 Booklist

Gr 1-3-While the end products-from pop-up cards to heart baskets-are not spectacular, these eight crafts are simple to complete, with easy-to-follow instructions. A color photo of the finished piece is included. The book opens with a two-page history of Valentine's Day; brief notes on the holiday symbols and traditions (cupid, hearts, lacy cards) introduce the projects. These standard crafts, which allow for minimal personal touches, would be usable in a classroom or group setting.-G. Alyssa Parkinson, Highland Township Library, MI (c) Copyright 2010.
