Review by Library Journal Review
Seemingly ideal for the casual gardener or hobbyist, this is a good beginner's primer with a wee bit of everything. Information is presented succinctly and readably with many bright and cheerful photographs. True to the title, much of the material is straightforward direction-plant like this, water and feed like so. Introductory chapters cover sowing (including seeds vs. transplants), growing, and harvesting techniques. Normal ground gardens and container gardens alike, planting in borders vs. in raised beds-it's all covered, as is mulching and improving soil organically. Individual plants are categorized by plant families (e.g., salad greens, the onion family, herbs, etc.) in two-page entries that include the titular three-step, sow-grow-harvest steps. Dudes will be reaping their own harvests in no time. Now all the publisher needs to do is throw together a little religious compound starter reading kit that includes Hunter S. Thompson's Guns & Ammo: Tips for the Newbie and Frank Lloyd Wright's little-known and now-lost House Construction on the Cheap, and we'll be ready to go Beyond Thunderdome in no time.-Douglas Lord, Connecticut State Lib., Middletown (c) Copyright 2010.
