Iowa City Municipal Airport Opening the west to aviation 1918-2007

Jan Olive Nash

Book - 2007

After nearly 90 years of operation, Iowa City's Benjamin airstrip-turned Smith Field-turned Municipal Airport continues to evolve. New general aviation T-hangars and a large corporate hangar sprawl over the field once occupied by the Shaw Aircraft Company. A new runway extension underway in 2007 will result in the final curtain for the old Boeing hangar-demolition of a longtime witness to aviation history in Iowa City. This publication serves to mitigate the hangar's loss by preserving some of its history.
