Laid out much like a textbook, with photographs, charts, and informative sidebars, this guide by Kirkendall (coach) and Garrett (Duke Univ. Medical Center) is divided into three chapters: "Nutrition and Fluid Intake," "Training," and "Injuries." Preceding the text is an introduction describing the physicality of the game and the difference between the men's and women's game. The initial chapter covers diets and eating habits. The book also addresses nutritional supplements, sports drinks, and water consumption during play. "Training" covers topics like how to test a player for fitness and playing in extreme heat. It also offers tips on reducing the chance of injuries. The last chapter discusses the most common soccer injuries in all parts of the body, literally from head to toe. Following the chapters is a helpful two-page list of further reading, including Web sites. Adding to the book's ease of use are "From the Team Doc" sidebars highlighting major topics (coauthor Garrett is a former team doctor for the US national team). Overall, this is a clear, helpful guide for anyone involved in the game of soccer at any level, from elementary school-age children to adults. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels. M. P.
