Review by Choice Review

The revolutionary furniture designs produced by the five Nordic countries during the second half of the 20th century were enormously successful on an international scale. Gura (New York School of Interior Design/Pratt Institute) traces the common design heritage of Scandinavia and its evolution into a shared aesthetic based on the belief that everyday objects should be both beautiful and practical. The book covers the design history of each country separately, followed by sections devoted to various types of furniture (the largest segment is devoted to chairs). Although much has been written about Scandinavian design, this book presents 500 carefully selected designs that also include the most up-to-date pieces that constitute the current revival in Nordic design. It includes a list of furniture producers, from large factories to individual artisans, along with a short biography of each designer covered and a bibliography for further reading. An accompanying CD-ROM contains screen-resolution JPEG files of all images in the book. This work would be most useful to collectors and interior design students. Summing Up: Recommended.
