Avid birders already have an amazing assortment of useful texts providing identification clues and natural history information about these fascinating creatures. In many respects, this one by Brinkley (editor of the quarterly North American Birds) does not seem remarkably different from others appearing in recent years. Basically, good field guides can be grouped into two categories: those that are photograph-based and those displaying high quality paintings. This National Wildlife Federation contribution represents the former, and in this respect is probably as good as or better than any available guide. The photographs are exceptional, showing adults (male and female, when appropriate), and in some cases immature birds. Range maps are included with the species accounts, which are fairly standard. One feature that sets this guide apart is the inclusion of a two-page introduction to each family group that discusses various aspects of behavior, gives identification hints, and covers the general health of wild populations in North America--whether declining, stable, or increasing--and possible environmental reasons for these changes. Overall, this is a very good field guide for any library--with or without significant ornithological holdings. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels. P. K. Lago University of Mississippi
