This recently published dictionary of Iowa place-names by Savage (bookstore co-owner) is a key resource that fills a significant gap in Iowa historical names and places research. The dictionary was compiled from communications with Iowa county and city officials, historical societies, museums, and libraries. Each brief entry offers geographical and statistical data about the county or town, and a historical narrative on how the name was given to that country or town. For places with a history of alternate names, additional information is presented. The narratives vary in length and detail, likely depending on the responses that the author received from county and town historical representatives. This work represents an exciting development in Iowa historical dictionaries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners; general readers. E. S.
