Review by Booklist Review

Part of the Exploring the Elements series, this shows a varied cast of children and adults enjoying the outdoors and explaining why they like the sun. A typical double-page spread begins with a statement on the left side, such as I like the sun because it melts icicles. On the right, on a closed gatefold page, the child ponders, I wonder how icicles are made. The gatefold opens to a four-part explanation of the process, illustrated with four small pictures showing stages of icicle formation. Kaner also describes where dew comes from, why shadows form, and how the sun makes rainbows. In the explanation of what makes day and night, the statement The sun never moves is an oversimplification, since the entire galaxy is in motion. But this is a minor point in an otherwise helpful presentation. Lafrance's pleasing paintings include well-composed landscapes and close-ups. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2007 Booklist

The left-hand pages feature simple statements about why someone might like the sun (""I like the sun because I get to wear my sunglasses""). Right-hand pages then present queries (""I wonder how sunglasses work""), which are answered on fold-out flaps. The main pages' color-saturated acrylic paintings tell a story while the flap pages illustrated with spot art help explain the concepts. (c) Copyright 2010.
