Editors Johnston and Percy present a wonderful anthology of 26 previously unpublished one-act plays just about evenly divided between the ten-minute "curtain-raiser" variety and more contemplative yet still stunningly succinct plays running up to 30 minutes. Their collection can stand on its own as a showcase for both new and experienced authors, with plays suitable for acting workshops and competitions. It also can serve as a supplemental text for playwriting classes. Each play is preceded by a two- to three-paragraph introduction by the editors that highlights important points relative to the mechanics of the script; appendixes include material that will be of use to the novice author or student. The plays themselves range from the sweet and tender to the adamantly bizarre, and there is not a clunker among them. Of particular note are Holly Walter Kerby's description of a modern affliction in "Attention" and Lisa Dillman's truly twisted "Clowny." Strongly recommended for larger public and all academic libraries.-Larry Schwartz, Minnesota State Univ. Lib., Moorhead (c) Copyright 2010.
