Review by Booklist Review

This attractive volume from the Animals after Dark series introduces owls. After an illustrated glossary, short topical sections (usually on double-page spreads) present subjects such as 'The Owl's History and Mystery," 'Hunting and Eating," and 'Raising Young." A typical spread includes a large, captioned photo of owls and three paragraphs of information, clearly presented in short sentences and printed in large type. Showing a variety of owl species, the color photos neatly illustrate the text. In keeping with the nocturnal theme of the series, most pages are black, with print appearing in a light-gold typeface. The book concludes with fast facts and short lists of books and Web sites.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2007 Booklist

Gr 2-3-This intriguing title presents basic information about owls' feeding habits and habitats plus interesting, lesser-known aspects of the species. There are passing references to owls in folklore and in the "Harry Potter" books, plus reminders that these birds should not be captured as pets. Each spread features a page of text facing a full-color, captioned photo. Most of the text is printed in yellow on black backgrounds. An additional purchase, where needed.-Farida S. This book offers a straightforward introduction to owls. The clear text features interesting facts about the birds' lives and habitats, generally printed in light-colored text on a black background to support the night animals theme.
