Review by Booklist Review
The first question of any serious knitter (indeed, crafter, for that matter) when assessing a new book: Does it live up to its billing? And second: What's the reputation of the author and publisher? Here, the answer to both is an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Fast and fun projects is truly the name of the game; every item is pegged with an average number of hours until completion, along with occasional speeding-up tips, as well as recommendations for improvements. Who knew, for instance, that new needles can slow efforts--and that applying a bit of furniture polish followed by a soft cloth solves the issue? Adding further value is the Reader's Digest name; expect big type, lots of photographs and illustrations, easy-to-digest instructions, and patterns adaptable for any occasion. Most of the 50 designs--accessories and clothing--are styled for women; a few, with additional panels or rows, could migrate into afghans or sofa wraps. Look for color, recycled materials, information about specific yarn brands, and, in general, a lively but not breakthrough approach to contemporary knitting. --Barbara Jacobs Copyright 2007 Booklist
