Gr. 2-4. Patrick, author of Ma Dear's Old Green House 0 see review, p.978) and others, joins the editors of a popular classroom newsmagazine to craft this entry in the new Timefor Kids Biographies series. For readers in the middle to upper range of the weekly's broad readership, these spin-offs, formatted (somewhat misleadingly) like easy readers and emblazoned with the familiar red-and-yellow logo, feature lively journalistic design, excellent photographs drawn from the Time-Life0 archives, and a polished narrative extended with sidebars. In this book, there's a concluding interview (a recurring feature in the series) with Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon--whose own, browsable Promises to Keep 0 BKL F 15 04 is a natural next step. A different writer has collaborated with Time0 - Life'0 s editorial staff on each book in the series, which currently includes titles on John F. Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harriet Tubman.\b \b0 --Jennifer Mattson Copyright 2005 Booklist

Review by Horn Book Review

Using period photos and illustrated sidebars, this easy-to-read biography is a good introduction to Robinson's life and career. The text informs readers about complex issues, such as segregation, while remaining accessible. The busily designed book concludes with a brief interview with Robinson's daughter. Timeline. Time For Kids: Jackie Robinson Strong Inside and Out Chapter One Hero On the Field Jackie Robinson stepped onto the field in his new Brooklyn Dodgers baseball uniform. He was nervous. The crowd roared. Cameras flashed. Reporters scribbled on their notepads. It was 1947. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was the first African American to play baseball for a modern major-league team. He was big news because he was breaking rules. Back in the 1940s, laws in many states told black people where they could live, work, or even eat. The sports world was also segregated. Baseball players who happened to be African American had to play in a league of their own, separate from white players. Jackie Robinson was about to change all of that. The Brooklyn Dodgers' owner, Branch Rickey, had warned Jackie of what could happen. Some fans would be angry. Ballplayers might try to hurt him. Some teams might refuse to compete against a team with a black man. Jackie would have to hold his head up and play the best ball he ever had. Many people asked that day, "Can he do it? Can he take the hard times and not fight back?" Jackie Robinson's answer to the world was yes! When he walked onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, on April 15, 1947, he knew he was ready to handle anything. Time For Kids: Jackie Robinson Strong Inside and Out .
