Review by Booklist Review

This simply written, large-format book talks a little about the U.S. Constitution: what it is, when and why it was written, what it does, and why it is important. Illustrated with exceptionally clear, large color photos and reproductions of period paintings and engravings, the volume presents basic facts in an attractive format that is suitable for sharing with classroom groups. A great deal of information is left out, but that is inevitable, given the brevity of the text (about 150 words in the main section) and the age of the target audience. Back matter includes a brief bibliography, instructions for reaching the publisher's FactHound Internet portal for further research, and a glossary defining terms such as Bill of Rights, Revolutionary War,0 and law.0 Although children will still need an informed adult to answer their questions, this is a good starting place for talking about the Constitution before a visit to the National Archives, on Constitution Day, or as an adjunct to studies. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2006 Booklist

Review by Horn Book Review

Allen attempts to describe the Constitution to very young readers, many of whom will not have sufficient knowledge to understand her explanations. The glossary helps clarify the information, but its vocabulary is more challenging than the text. However, the book could be a starting point for discussion. Full-page illustrations face each page of text. Reading list. Ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
